I found it useful (when I used to teach) to have my tuba at the lesson. I feel that playing the excerpt (or etude, etc...) can make the lesson more clear; after they have tried to figure it out for themselves. Of course, do not do this all of the time. It is also good, in my opinion, to occasionally play some duets in the lesson.
Remember, everyone that teaches gave that first lesson. Most of us were nervous, most of us learned (how to teach) and most of us did ok. Also remember your teachers and what they did, assigned, etc...
