Larry: You must remember that I have been playing an F tuba for 50 years, especially in quintets. At first I sought something larger than the typical German F's mainly because of their bright and brittle low registers. The pedal notes were fine but a little abrasive. I progressively got larger F's until I settled on the Kalison 6/4, which has a wonderful range and marvelous low register. It has more sure-ness in the upper register than a small CC and a better low register. That low register depends on having the sixth valve and knowing all about using it. Matching the tuba with the other instruments has always been a great problem, and if the tuba isn't agile enough it will be replaced with a bass bone. Harry Critchley
