I would also advise you against playing novelty piece. He may not know the repertoire, but he definitely knows style (or is it genre?...). There are plenty of "serious" pieces out there that are every but as difficult as the "Flash and Trash" ones. Having said this, pick something that suits your ability level; the most important thing is to demonstrate your ability to play tuba, not your ability to choose rep. A horn concerto sounds like a good idea actually. Have you checked out the R. Stauss' first?

Also, be patient. Two years ago when I was a freshman, I played the Arban first Characteristic Study for my first ensemble audition. I played the first half of it nearly flawlessly before the director stopped me, but I didn't get into the top group. Sometimes these things are out of your control.
