The plain "SM3" has a large shank, and the SM3M is an old Besson (i.e. European) shank. The Mead mouthpiece are apparently only available in medium and large shanks, possibly because the open throat and backbore of them would not fit well into a tenor trombone (i.e. small) shank. The plain Denis Wick 4 mouthpiece comes in all three sizes, and the small shank model is a DW4Y--apparently Y means Yamaha.
