In many cases droping down an octave adds a lot to the sound as long as one avoids using real pedal notes. For example, F four lines below the staff is the pedal on the F tuba and an F tubist should not drop down to that note or any lower ones! The same holds for the Eb, CC, BBb and lower tubas which should not drop lower than Eb, C and Bb, respectively. On my double tuba the lowest non-pedal note is F below the lowest note on the piano. That is because the low side of the tuba is in low E and it has five valves which can be used in various combinations to get all of the notes needed for the aforementioned descent. That note and the ones above it deriving from the second open tone have the same overtone spectrum, more or less. When you drop down to the pedal you keep all of the same harmonics and add new ones between each of the old ones!
