Now this might just be because of the selections we play in our band, seeing as it's a high school band, but I found that a lot of times, a descending line will skip up after a low A, but once it skips up to the G, it keeps descending. I think that sometimes composers don't want to push tubists (especially in high school) in their lower range because of what a high schooler might sound like playing down there. I have, on occasion, just kept the lines going down because our other two players go up the octave. Once that line is over, though, I get out of the pedals.
