Yes, a change in the rim only can change the way the mouthpiece plays. The rim contour can make a rim of the same measured size feel larger or smaller. It can make the sound harder or easier to focus, and can give the player more or less flexibility and endurance. Also there is a balence to the parts of a good mouthpiece that makes it seem good all around. One other thing to consider is that when having a custom mouthpiece made, the results are more predictable if the new mouthpiece combines known parts from existing mouthpieces-such as a C4 rim on a cup from another mouthpiece, or a Helleberg rim, with a different cup that suits the F tuba.
