I was there and I think it specifically had to do with the difference in difficulty of pieces required for the respective auditions. The only pieces that posed any difficulty in the band audition was the Vaugn Williams and possibly the Bernstein. however, the orchestral audition had some very challenging pieces that required a different caliber of player. The Berlioz, Wagner, and Mahler (if you get nervous), are not exactly the easiest excerpts to play.
