I feel that reading during rehearsals is fine, but not during a performance. If the audience can see you, it looks tacky. Church gigs, balconies, fine, but not on stage. I really enjoyed sitting (and listening to)the 'New World' as a tacet performer. Thats a great piece and to be able to listen to it while sitting in the middle of the orchestra was great. Yeah, i know that some tubists have played (or not played) it a million times, but theres always something different to listen for or another perspective to listen from. Besides, someone has to help the bass bone player count rests.
