I currently have a student at FIU that is doing just what you're pursuing. He came in as a Masters student on tuba and decided that he'd rather major in conducting. Now he's playing in as many ensembles as he likes (and can fit into his schedule), studying conducting with a really great but mostly unknown band conductor (Roby George) and taking private lessons with me. His name is James Yaques and he has posted here on Tube-Net in the past. Look up his prior posts in the archives and get his email address so that you can email him and ask his opinion about how things are here. He's a straight shooter and will tell you pros as well as cons. Good luck wherever you end up!
