Some acoustical researcher worked with the function of the vocal chords in brass playing. The test persons were 3 horn players, two male and one female.

The result was surprising to me, who in my own playing and and teaching have stressed, that the vocal chords should be as relaxed and open as possible.

The players used their vocal to set their air stream into vibrations at the frequency of the note, that was to be started within the next split second.

As the female player could not sing all of the low range horn notes, she activated the air stream at a frequency one octave above those low notes.

I would be very cautious about using this finding as an element in ones conscious technique development. I have heard far more people having a bad sound due to tense vocal chords, than due to an overall relaxed technique.
