In my 60 plus years of playing in bands, I have seen many double bell euphs. However, not one of the players ever used the small bell! The small bell could be a great asset if it was used to pitch the euph in Eb, E (preferably) or when it was in use. It would solve the intonation problems of sharp high Eb, E, F, F# and G present on many of the instruments and would close the gap between the low E and Bb below the bass clef staff. It would be a discant euphonium. All it takes is three double valves and a switch valve! One could put any number of valves on a euph but remember, it takes 11 single valves to really tune it up!
