Exactly I can of course back your endorsing of the Besson 983. I like mine very much.
Even if I find the Besson BBb 994 3+1 comper a bit small for my wishes, it still is a pretty big instrument. Maybe its older versions, be they named Besson 992, Besson New Standard, or B&H Imperial, would be accessible and fulfilling for the needs expressed.
I am not endorsing these, but I would find it worth giving them a try.
