A colleague of mine is a former member of the Moscow Philharmonic. At that time it was very difficult for players to acquire the variety of instruments that are available here, and the tubist in the orchestra only owned a BBb tuba. My friend Yuri remembers an occasion when a German conductor asked the tubist where his small tuba was for Bydlo and was stunned when he was told of the tubist's intention to play it on the big horn. He then played it so brilliantly that the conductor brought him to the front of the stage for bows.
There is also that old Kubelik/Chicago Symphony recording where Jacobs does it on the York CC. It can work for some combinations of horn and musician. As for me, I'm glad to be retired from Bydlo!
