Rick, go to the bugle section on the Kanstul website and look at the GG Contra Grande bugle (and check out the weight of this beast). What I understand from this is that the ring was inherited from the bugle, which merely used it as a way to transport the horn conveniently. Though I think that Howard mentioned something about a hand-hammered bell option, I can't recall exactly.
