Mark,
My approch does not always involve taking the instument apart. I can reach most single isolated dents the way they have always been dealt with (using dent barrels.) It is tricky and requires a bit of skill. The dent eraser can mar and scuff and distort the brass every bit as much, although differently than a torch. I find that the lion's share of instruments these days have finishes that stand up to heat and allow partial disassembly without scorching. Using the proper type of flux when putting it back together helps to avoid burning the epoxy coatings. The dent eraser has its place, but as for me I find it an expensive tool with limited application. Especialy when dealing with tubas that have extensive damage.

Thanks for your comments.
