Copyright law allows a fair use of reasonably small excerpts for the purposes of critical review, academic study, or even satire. I believe this falls into the latter category.

And the Mahler, at least in its original form, must have been public domain in the U.S. before 1978 when all the rules changed. (1978-56=1922--any publication in the U.S. before that date would have gone into the public domain before the new copyright law, and once in the public domain, always in the public domain, unless you are Shostakovich.)
