Pianists and at least on percussionist (marimba) tell me they tend to remember hand positions as much as anything. Similar to fingerings?? Remembering fingerings (patterns) seems to come easier (to me). This type of transposition, if you want to call it that, sounds like a good excercise to work into a practice routine.
