I think that's the purpose of valve oil (and I don't mean this at all in a sarcastic way at all). Further, when pistons fit very very well, slight sideways pressure doesn't seem to have much of an effect (again, valve oil in place is the final ingredient).
If we compare these misdirected forces to those that occur on rotary valves, right away we notice that the action arm on all rotor linkages are - by necessity - attached off-center (just as they are on old steam locomotives).
Yep, everything wears - gradually and eventually.
