I whole-heartedly agree about just doing it. I am just now getting back into the habit of sight reading more stuff more often. I would recommend that you get the Tyrell 40 Studies for BBb Tuba (I think) and just practice reading the first phrase of each. For all-state etudes, I abhor the book. For sight-reading, it's pretty darn good. Also consider the Blazevich (sp?) Studies Volume II I think. Another great one for sightreading.

Also try playing in just about any ensemble you can. The more time you have in front of a music stand, the more time and eventually experience you will have with reading music. It takes practice. Doesn't everything?
