It has been a very long layoff, and I think that's part of the trouble. However, I had a guy who's been playing a lot more and much more recently than I have play it this week before rehearal and he had the same feelings about some difficulty in the higher register with centering and feeling a little stuffy. He noted that the vulme seemed to drop by half when he reached Bb on top of the staff.
I'm thinking of a few lessons. There's an adjunct prof at the local U who teaches privately, and I've been in touch with him.
