I do remember marching in a parade where 1) everyone's valves froze so we sang "Jingle Bells" as we went past the reviewing stand and 2)a member of the band had to be treated for frostbite. Also, I used to play many Oktoberfests outdoors at Bear Mountain, NY and at times the temp. was in the 40's. This may not seem bad but it was a 4 and 1/2 hour gig outdoors in lederhosen, (yes, I admit it) with a large recording bell Martin BBb in my lap. What made it interesting is that while the pitch of the tuba would go down 1/2 step at these temps., the electronic keyboard/accordion would not be affected at all. This made it necessary for me to play everything in keys like B major, E major and F# major. It took some of the monotony out of the gig!
