Whe I was in the Air Force we had our hearing checked every year. Mine improved over the years, despite NEVER wearing earplugs, and sitting in the middle of the Airmen of Note, one of the loudest bands around, and in front of some of the loudest trumpet players anywhere. I refused to sit next to the drummer, however, and I think that's what saved me.
A point that gets missed by everyone, especially the doctors involved, is that we're not talking about just EXTERNAL sound. The majority of the volume we receive as players comes from INTERNALLY, and I believe it's better to NOT wear earplugs, because the sound is largely phase-cancelled by the internal vs. external sound waves. That is why your voice and playing sounds much louder internally when you insert plugs. It may be even more dangerous with plugs. I was told this by a hearing-aid clinic.
If I were sitting next to the drummer, I'd wear one in that ear...
