You're all right. Loud music can damage the ear. 85dBA is the cut-off for an 8hour day per year. Above that, protection is needed. Musician's ear plugs are the best answer as they are designed to attenuate sound evenly over the frequency range, thereby maintaining the quality of music. All musician's should consider the following reference: "Hear the Music. Hearing Loss Prevention for Musicians" by Marshall Chasin. He is a director of the only musician's hearing clinic in the world, in Canada. His new book is intended expressly for musician's, band director's, etc. and is excellent. It covers every aspect of acoustics, music, ear protection, etc. Not expensive. I expect that you can get it by contacting the Musician's Hearing Clinic of Canada.
