Dave,
I own an early PT4P, which is the fore-runner of the PT-20, I like this horn in a lot of ways, and as my small CC tuba its a pretty damn good quintet and small ensemble horn. The 188's I've played, on the other hand, would NOT be my selection as "my small CC" because the 188 is not so small!
Put another way, IF I were to own ONE horn and ONE horn only, and I were in a rotary frame of mind, THEN I would get a 188. IF I were to own ONE horn and ONE horn only, and I wanted pistons, I would NOT get the PT-20 as (for me) I could not cover the large ensemble stuff the way I like to do, with that horn. But then, your mileage may differ.
Does this help? Hope so...
-Dale
