It seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that most bell front tubas (& sousa's) have a larger bell than there upright counterparts. They even appear to have a quicker flair as opposed to what seems to be a more gradual (may I say conical) flair. Is there a technical reason for this (the fact that it has to bend) or is there a sound thing behind this? In other words, is a larger bell (and a "quick flair") necessary to create a good sound when the sounds going towards you, and unnecessary when the sounds going up?
