James, you say you're not fond of the 4 valve Yamaha (school horn). I suspect that it's the 'non-compensating' model, the 321. Before you rule out Yamaha, you should try the YEP-642 compensating model. It is a darker tone than the Besson, but you should try it. The bore of the 642 or 842 is .591 vs .571 of the 321 model. PLUS the 642 has the large shank mpc receiver.

One of my favorite euphoniumists is Thomas Ruedi of Switzerland. Here's a Swiss player who is playing the Yamaha 642, where he could easily choose to play the Willson or Hirsbrunner. If you haven't heard of Mr. Ruedi, you should get his CD, "Elegie". Fantastic!

Good luck finding the right horn for you. Everyone has different tastes and desires, but do try the YEP-642 (or 842 if you like gold trim).
