The benefit of having the mouthpiece in the center is that people who think it makes a difference won't hassle you. Personally, I think you should put it where it works best, wherever that may be. My trombone mouthpiece is extremely to the left. I moved it there from the center when I discovered that it worked much better there. Better endurance, range, and tongueing.
