Helicons do play with the bell off to the side- tell me if I'm missing something here! I restored a 1919 Holton BBb helicon, and the neck was basically the same as the modern Holton sousaphone neck. This neck was attached to a long, winding lower mouthpipe that went into the main tuning slide, then into the valve section. E-mail me privately if you have any difficulties with this, as I have photos of the finished product.
