You might really want to consider a CC tuba, if he is really serious. In general, the CC tuba is known to get more of the core of the sound, which at a high school level and beginner collegiate level, automatically beats the sound of a BBb tuba. Trust me, been there and the judges like the CC tuba sound better atleast 99% of the time.
Along the same lines, I've been looking for a high school or collegiate student interested in buying a great all-around horn. I'm selling one of my CC tubas. It's a Perantucci PT-3, with 5 rotary valves. If you are interested, just e-mail me and I can send you pictures...If not, I would still think hard about the CC tuba over the BBb tuba.
