I never fell during performance, although I came close on the very first night. That's when the Band discovered that the ice surface changes during a period of college hockey. I caught an edge while sliding into position and had to choose between going down under some semblence of control (I had actually practiced that - it's not all that tough), or...taking a short hop and hoping that I could hold the landing. I won the gamble, and the crowd thought it was all part of the act.
If you think skating with a Sousaphone is tough, try the bass drum, especially on the counter-skate!
