I've had about a zillion teachers on several instruments. Two of them stand out, and for the same reason: they were able and willing to show/tell me how to do things physically in order to get the results I was looking for. A classical guitar teacher showed me very specifically how to hold my hands and use them for correct guitar technique, and gave me progressive exercises to train them. And an amateur but very intelligent horn player told me some specifics about embouchure that I simply never ever would have figured out for myself, despite having a very clear picture of what tone and sound I wanted.
I can get "the music" just by listening to great people play. I can't get the technique unless someone takes the care and time to show me.
