I'd like to second and emphasize Kenneth's point #2 on the metronome as substitute for conductor and ensemble.

Somewhere in my deep dark past of practicing without a metronome I developed the very bad habit of stopping everytime I played a mistake to go back and fix that section before I continued with the piece. As a result, when I played with a band, everytime I made a mistake (often) I self-destructed in my attempt to go back and correct.

I never figured out what the problem was until my piano teacher noticed the tendency in a sight-reading lesson and suggested practice with a metronome.

That little "tick, tick, tick" just won't let you stop and back up.

Hope this is understandable,

Mike Ross
