I guess it would be fine to have the instrument "tuned" to A=443, as long as the tuning slide that came with it was long enough to comfortably get to 440 for most players. It sounds like that is not the case. I would think that it would be better to have to pull the slide than to have the slide all the way in and still be too flat for the group you were playing with.
