If you have an instrument repair professional in your area, take it to them. They can buff the areas where the lacquer is worn off. Then, very importantly, they know how to degrease the areas prior to lacquering, so it will look good and the lacquer will stick and not peel off soon afterward. Thirdly, they actually have the air-dry lacquer on hand, and are experienced in using it. Finally, they are happy to do this for you, and will save you a lot of time and trouble.
