I am 6'3'' and 280lbs and a college football player so little lung problem here. However, I played next to a gal in high school that was just 5 foot tall and a had little lungs. She Started on a YBB-321. My private tuba instructor put her on a 3/4 tuba and that helped a little. We did lots of drills for breathing. Try this drill. Have them fill their lungs on a slow count to 4. do that 4 times....then do full lung fill on a count to 3...4 times....then 2 then 1 et cetera....do this before they warm up on the mouthpiece during their daily practice. This can even be done while riding in the car or anywhere. I found it helpful to do when running wind sprints or lifting weights. The result for the girl(with practice) was not being winded all the time and being able to hold the 4 measure phrase.

Good luck!
