Rotary Springs

I have a 30 year old 4 valve rotary tuba (VMI/B&S stencil) which has the external, wound springs and the older "S" style linkage. As this horn has past through many sets of hands during its life, I have to assume that the springs are the originals. The horn is in very good condition overall, but I was curious as to the life expectancy of the springs. I had the tuba overhauled last year and the repair tech did not mention the condition of the springs.

Do the springs start to loose their tension after extended use?
Are there tell-tale signs that the springs should be replaced?
If I had Uniball/Miniball linkages installed, would the springs be replaced as well?

Thanks for your input.
