I had a similar experience with a Solo CD by a very prominent upright bass player.
It left me scratching my head - This was a studio recording, with no accompaniment; There was all the room in the world for editing / re-takes, etc.

The end of that story, however, is that I still think that player is tops, because he's fabulous on other recordings, Including lots of live stuff, and has had a long and distinguished career. I just figure he was hearing things differently on that CD.

I hope the posters who have cited specific recordings that leave 'em cold haven't let that keep them from examining enough recordings, and perhaps recording themselves, to see (or hear) the bigger picture.
