As always, Sean's on a secure stand here.
f.w.i.w.&i.m.o. a lot of difficulty in critical listening for today's musician
is we grounded in a tendency to forget technology variables.
Here's what I am getting at: fantastic improvement is generally acknowledged
in the facility of today's aspiring pro tubists,
but do we forget there have been qualitatively HUGE changes in recording technology,
hall acoustical engineering, and even (for the players) ensemble-sense?
A little understanding of the referenced recording's "history" might also help
... e.g. I thought the Jacobs VW was the infamous "one take" recording,
the one that Mr. Jacobs thought was a run through when he played it
and not the actual take!
If thats the recording in question, maybe "decidedly average" is a compliment!
It's also known that Mr Jacobs was never happy with the unflattering recording experiences he'd had in that hall over the years -
- he even went so far as to order a bell-front Holton
to try and counter what he considered an unfavorable recording setting for his section!

I do think one way to minimize "flames" over "touchy topics"
is to be up front about who you are when you post the question.....
yeah yeah I know "there-goes-Phelps-on-his-anonymous-posting-kick-again"
.... but think about it, isn't allowing for discussion of differing opinions
somewhat predicated on knowing (to some extent) whose opinions we're discussin'?
Just some thoughts....
