I believe you received other good advice concerning your Gb/F# predicament. Experimentation is definitely the answer. Whatever works, works. On my Miraphone 186-CC, I can pretty much play any note above the staff with either an open fingering or 2nd valve. Things are quite flexible up there. It depends more on my embouchure setting than it does on my choice of fingering.
