I do have some experience with the jupiter sousaphoone. As I am a big fan of the 4 valve 582's, I equally am not a fan of the sousaphones. The valve problems, and sound are the biggest concerns.
Realizing budget concerns, my administration allows me to buy used instruments. This is where I get the older horns that you did not want to mention. I also realize that some schools buy new all of the time, no exceptions. If this is the case, then I place the jupiter metal horn in the same ballpark as the yamaha sousaphones. That would be the better than convertables park.
I also agree with other posters that some of the conn fiberglass horns sound better, and are better built, IMO.
