Frankly, when I was starting in high school as a euph player (of course that was in the dark ages when everybody still called it 'THE BARITONE' and people would ask 'BARITONE WHAT?, now they just ask, 'OH, DOUBLE-BELLED EUPHONIUM?'), my director asked me to play trombone in the jazz band, and I jumped at it. No struggling here.

My advice is to expand your horizons. Jazz trombone will expose you to a lot of rhythms not ordinarily seen in band music. I think it will help with your sight reading, and, from what I understand, auditions for the service bands are heavily dependent on sight reading. As others have expressed, it will help with your ear as well.

My opinion, for the nickel it's worth, is that different mouthpieces may be in order depending on the horn you use. The Schilke 51D that I use on my euph just plain does not work on my Libery 2B 'peashooter' trombone. (plays too flat)
