In my experience, if my resume has not been up to snuff for a particular audition, they do ask for a tape. Of course, the typical response is, "well, who knows if they listen to it?" From what I've heard, they actually do listen to them. And I know of people who have been invited based on a taped audition.

I know the system is rough, but how many people would show up for a given audition if everyone was invited? For the Colorado Symphony audition, there were 50 tuba players who came to the audition. It was kept on schedule very well, and the audition took ALL DAY - 9am-5pm. Not to mention the time for getting stuff set up before. That's a long day for a committee. I know that it could go a lot longer, but I don't think that many orchestras have the budget to have three days of preliminary auditioning.

just my opinion based on my experience.
