I had really noisey valves on my miraphone, too. After tightening all the external screws and linkages and replacing the rubber stops they were still clanking. Finally, I pulled out the rotors and cleaned them. The noise, however, did not come from the filth, which there was plenty of. The noise did come from the rotors being very slightly loose on the inside.

Your instructors advice was exactly what my horn needed. Indeed, you should tap the rotor from the back with a wooden dowel. The important thing is not to bang on the rotor with the hammer.
