Steve, the only time I've sensed the sort of intonational conflict you're fearing is when sitting in section with mixed BBflat and CC tubas. If you dont wanna use your eefer, and don't wanna learn CC, try a small BBflat like a 184 or 185 Mirafone (call Tony Clements, I saw a 185 in his studio last weekend that might be for sale.) If on a budget AND you want something in pistons, you "might" try a Weril, but I personally have no experience with these instruments (call David Fedderly about Werils, he may have one or two you can play-test....)
