If you can go to a store such as the shops Richard mentioned it would be best, since your son could try them out and see which horn fits best. The answer could depend on your son's size yet. I teach two eighth graders and they a about a foot different in height! so a horn the bigger boy could handle would be too big for the smaller boy at this stage of the game. There is also a guy near Reading, PA (Harvey's Horns is his name on ebay) who buys, sells and repairs used tubas. You can get a nice instrument from him for around $2000 or less. Two to three years down the road you could probably sell it for what you paid and then upgrade. I also recommend finding a good teacher, with the money you save on the used tuba.
