When I'm tonguing, by habit I move the the tongue down as I go into the lower register. When this happens, it hinders the airflow and consequently I tend to muscle out the tonguing. So when I tongue I make sure I keep my tongue above the teeth on the gum, no matter where in my range I am playing.
