Advantages:

You could get more pit band gigs where the dress code is "all black".
Disadvantages:
To achieve the colour black, a thicker layer (actually more very thin layers) is required (when compared with "normal" laquer or slightly tinted/less dramatic colours) This could slightly deaden the sound of the instrument.
[It's the same principle as needing more coats of white paint to turn a black wall white, than you would need to turn a cream coloured wall white.]
