I've owned both lacquered and un-Lacquered tubas. I've only had green-hand problem on instruments with un-developed patina. Once the brass oxidizes to that nice, lovely brown shade it really isn't a problem. If you try and keep a raw-brass instrument shiny, then you will always have the green-had effect. I also never noted a funny smell!....I suspect that any smells would be a result of something internal to the plumbing rather than on the surface of the brass.

I don't think that there is much of a "musical thing" to it either when your playing down-low where the tubas go.

I just like the raw brass look....and my raw brass tuba seems to sound right-nice when I manage to do the right things at the small-end. I think the new CC-Conns and BBb-King would look great with a nice, even, dark-brown patina.
