Thanks, Tim, and "what I KNOW about tubas." After the (ahem) response, I got out my video of Great Conductors of the 20th Century, which has a section on Munch/BSO, with a few shots of Vinal Smith. The configuration you describe is hard to make out, but the profusion of slides and the wrapping certainly suggest more than four valves. Toby Hanks was at Tanglewood in '63, and recalled a 5 valve Kruspe. He was also greatly impressed by the effectiveness Mr. Smith had on this instrument in a performance of Prokofiev 5th. That same summer on visits, I heard Smith play Ein Heldenleben, and Hindemith's Nobilissima Visione. Most of us probably agree that Chester raised tuba playing to another level of virtuosity, but Vinal Smith was good, and sometimes he REALLY cooked.
